The Motor Vessel Dali owned by Grace Ocean, chartered Maersk and managed by Singapore based Synergy Ship Management Pvt Ltd was plowed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge at 1.26 am shortly after departing from the port of Baltimore.
The ship was under command of pilot at the time. The bridge was completely demolished in the accident throwing 9 passengers and around 20 workers on the bridge into the freezing water. Search and Rescue is still going on.
The ship reported to 'MD Department of Transportation (MDOT)' that they lost control over propulsion seconds before the accident and there is a chance of allision with the bridge neglecting all possibilities of intentional or act of terrorism.
As we analyse the footage, it is clear that the ship lost its power and was recovering it once and trying to run the engine but again power looses. Before regaining the control of Main Engine, it was too late.
Since the direction is controlled in a ship by rudder and the rudder is turned steering gear motors, electrical power is essential for turning. Also for the Main Engine to work, motors should work to direct fuel and air into the Main Engine. So, without electrical power the ship cannot be controlled or stopped.
The 9 year old ship had undergone 27 inspections since 2015 and only had 2 deficiencies. Notably, this included a June 2023 inspection in San Antonio, Chile, where a deficiency was found in the 'propulsion and auxiliary machinery'.
The cause of accident also can be fatigue since the time of accident was 1.30 am. Around 40 ships are currently on course for the Port of Baltimore. Georgio Hatzimanolis, an analyst for ship tracker MarineTraffic, said the accident may impact supply chains.
